Antonio Canova in England

In the autumn of 1816 year he gratified his wish he had long cherished of visiting London, where he was acknowledged with the highest tokens of esteem. The artist for whom he showed particular sympathy and regard in London was Benjamin Haydon, who was then recently transported to England, and ignorantly depreciated by polite connoisseurs and also the one who might at the time be counted as the sole representative of historical painting in London, and whom he especially honored for his championship of the Elgin marbles. Among Canova’s English pupils were sculptors Sir Richard Westmacott and John Gibson.
